Chief executive officer of Nvidia said in an interview that in the future personal computers will become much more powerful and should be considered as workstations by today’s standards. However, computers for casual operations will, by contrast, be rather underpowered devices. In other words, performance lag between fully-fledged PCs and netbooks will get bigger over time.

“I believe that the personal computers as we know it, will become a “workstation”. For example, our PC will become our workstation – we’ll be working at that station. Most families will have a multi-media workstation. But our “personal” computers for accessing the Internet or casual computing will likely just be a web based device, 4G with 20MB/s Internet connectivity will allow you to do everything with it,” said Jen-Hsun Huang in an interview with T-Break web-site.

Not only Mr. Huang, but other semiconductor industry experts foresee that in the future personal computers will sacrifice performance for portability. Such trend seems rather strange today, considering the fact that many smartphones now tend to trade battery life for performance and feature-set. Nevertheless, with the advent of cloud computing everything may change drastically.

The head of Nvidia seems to be a strong believer in futuristic computers from fantastic movies as well as cloud computing. According to him, the future is just around the corner.

“In twenty years, it will be Tegra on your handheld device and Tesla on a server. There will be millions and millions of Teslas all over the world rendering for everybody. […] [PC of the future] could either be a large or small tablet, just a sheet of glass so thin and possibly translucent with a camera to augment the image in front of you with computer graphics. That kind of future is not only a certainty, it is practically here,” Mr. Huang explained.
